The stealthy “ Triple Black ” edition arrived shortly after and was enough to convince people to give the new silhouette a try, competing against another favourite that year, the Air VaporMax Plus “ Triple Black ”. You would only have to look down to realise how the Air Max 270 and 720 were competing against the retro favourites such as the Air Max 90 and 97. Just like with the Air VaporMax from 2017, people would slowly warm up to the silhouette until it became hard to ignore. Until the Air Max Scorpion released in 2022, the Air Max 720 was Nike’s most environmentally friendly shoe, boasting over 75% of recycled manufacturing in its construction. The upper featured a ballistic mesh construction, balancing support and versatility with debossed lines that gave the shoe a sculpted aesthetic worthy of a contemporary art museum. Inside, a shiny foil paper would replace the standard wrapping paper, another indication that Nike was stepping up its level of presentation. The “ Northern Lights ” edition was the first colourway to hit the shelves, arriving in a new black box that was covered in the various Air Max logos from the past. The ‘720’ moniker came from the fact that you could see the Air unit from 360-degrees on the ground, as well as from up above thanks to the sole’s expanded profile.

While it wasn’t the first shoe to arrive with full-length Air, such as the predating Air Max 360 or even Air Max 2013, it was the first lifestyle version of full length Air that sneakerheads had seen. The new 38 millimetre Air unit overshadowed the previous year’s Air Max 270, which was also touted as having the biggest Air unit to date.

Unlike the original models from the ‘90s, the shoe was designed purely around lifestyle, moving away from the Air Max’s original performance running roots. In February 2019, Nike dropped the Air Max 720 as its new addition to the Air Max line up.
